However, it had gone through different stages of development which eventually lead to its present form. The folk theatre was popular in Bengali provinces until the British period. They performed their plays during festive seasons and occasions such as Holi and Durga puja. These performances were called “azad” or “panchayet” dramas which contained moral lessons and were performed by a troupe of artists all over the country. The plays were also a part of social life.
